DIARY of UBUNTU 16.04 on XPS 9360 started on 10/11/2017

  • When installing newer kernels: does not start with newer kernel, does not see mod on /etc/default/grub. So I run sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg. Seems ok
  • on change primary SITI, change pc34, VPNParma, vpn on cell & tablet, edit connection eduroam (on pc, cell, remarkable, Samsung tablet), sudo service cups stop, change pwd on /etc/cups/printers.conf TaskAlfa and sudo service cups restart, check user authenticate), firefox master (Lockwise ...), elly, imap and smtp on office365 including info.musr2020,(pc, lap, cell, ipad). Change also musr_n45, see help
  • Virtual WIN10 machine by ASI (like PTA)

  • LO seems self updated: now LO version with different layout, got stuck, had to remove .config/libreoffice/4/user to restart again (symptom: would not start and complained about LO being already started, whoch was not the case) and to upgrade TexMath to 0.46.1.

  • sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade april 11 2019. libreoffice was actually downgraded to 5 and stopped working. Repeated step below (Slow LibreOffice ...)

  • GIMP export layers as pdf pages: invert order of pages (drag and drop), export as out.mng, and convert out.mng out.pdf
  • reading .eml from Thunderbird (e.g. Dannata PEC da ateneo). Right click on attachment .eml, select Open with (search Thunderbird mail again)
  • shared folders in Thunderbird, only imap, Account name: appears in thunderbird, your name as it appears to recipients, email address, e.g., info.musr2020@unipr.it, server outlook.office365.com, port 993, username roberto.derenzi@unipr.it\info.musr2020, SSL/TLS normal password
  • problems with software-updater with solution (also solved problems with network-manager/ethernet)
  • installed xserver-xorg-input-libinput-hwe-16.04 and followed Dell XPS istructions for DLL075B:01 06CB:76AF Touchpad, to see the driver xinput -list, to check libinput options xinput list-props 10 [10 is id from list]
  • sudo apt-get install texlive-publishers in order to see revtex4-1.cls in pdflatex
  • FAX (as per Salvatore Aranzulla) Hallofax, bookmark Firefox: Telefono
  • install matlab for mulab

  • To avoid skype (or insert another applications) at startup: WIN (Unity filter): Startup Applications, select it and chek, uncheck accordingly.
  • installed mantid according to http://download.mantidproject.org/ubuntu.html
  • installed muesr 0.1.2 (VESTA)
  • When external monitor is not recognized through chinese box, use Screen Display in System Settings: if recognised but no output, switch to mirror, wait! and then reject the change. If not recognised, unplug and replug, pressing detect display, then follow previous procedure as spoon as the monitpor appears in the widget.
  • Reenable touchpad via the "Mouse & Touchpad GUI":use the Windows key -> type "Mouse and touchpad" -> ENTER; TAB to iterate through the items within the GUI until the ON/OFF slider is highlighted; Hit ENTER to toggle the switch back to "ON". Also try disable-reenable by typing xinput disable 'DLL075B:01 06CB:76AF Touchpad' and xinput enable 'DLL075B:01 06CB:76AF Touchpad' in the xterm (not sure it solves the intermittent problem of misbehaving touchpad, scrolling instead of moving the arrow).
  • installed rclone in /usr/local/bin/ (is it safe?)
  • Make out-of-sight window reappear. The window icon is present in [Alt-tab]; select it there (but it does not reappear), type [Alt-space]: a black panel appears with ... Move ...; click on Move and drag the window in sight
  • gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.desktop text-ellipsis-limit 0 (to avoid cutoff in displayed filename length on desktop, default was 3)
  • Virtualbox installed, no guest yet. For testing mujpy. Try direzione first. Maybe uninstall?
  • archiving messages under Office365: move from Thunderbird client bunches < 1000 msg at a time. Wait for synchro message. Compact folders (Inbox and ZArchives/Inbox-20xx) to reflect the change in the client.
  • installed skype with sudo apt-get install skypeforlinux, command skypeforlinux (re-install on 02/2018 solves audio problems of first version).
  • repaired apt by identifying half installed(removed/purged (iH,rH,pH) kernels by dpkg -l | tail -n +6 | grep -E 'linux-image-[0-9]+', making a backup with sudo cp /var/lib/dpkg/status /var/lib/dpkg/status.backup, manually deleting all blocks with a reference to the corresponding kernels with sudo gedit /var/lib/dpkg/status, and upgrading apt by sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade, plus @sudo apt autoremove@@

  • set terminal (gnome) Canc (delete) and Backspace (<-). to get normal behaviour chose edit/profile preferences/compatibility/
    Backspace key generates Automatic, Delete key generates Automatic (which is not the default)
  • set touchpad left, middle-, right-clik emulation as in mouse by synclient (left = 1-finger-tap, right=2-finger-tap, middle= 3-finger-tap)):
    synclient TapButton1=1 TapButton2=3 TapButton3=2
  • BRING BACK windows out of view: Use ALT+TAB to switch to the off-screen application, Press ALT-SPACE -> this shows the system menu, maybe the menu is not visible but you still can call its options. Press M to select the “Move” menu. The mouse shows a grasping hand, DO NOT click, just move around till you see the icon
  • restore Super key (Windows) for Unity help and shortcuts, following a Dell page sudo apt remove dell-supersynclient TapButton1=1 TapButton2=3 TapButton3=2-key

  • created user musr, rsynced /home/musr from lap34 HDD /home/backup/musr/ after changin own & grp to roberto.derenzi
  • papercut-client directory (owner roberto.derenzi) and papercut.sh (owner root, 755) copied from pc34 to /usr/local/bin/,
  • now vpn works (pulse-secure) also with the following commands
    VPNParma # to start, does NOT require & VPNstatus # to see IP and status VPSstop # to shut down
  • installed openjdk-8-jre:382 for jnc, jnc works (tun0 starts) but there is no connection (internet is frozen, as if with a non working proxy)
  • eduroam e UNIPR-WPA inner settings on ubuntu: wifi security WPA&WPA2 Enterprise; Protected EAP (PEAP) (often reset to something else); Anonymous identity: leave blank; CA Certificate (none; PEAP Version Auto; Inner autentication: MSCHAPv2; username e password as usual
  • thunderbird already there started off-the-box
  • rsynced 116 GB of home with rsync -av -e ssh --exclude-from=exclude.txt roberto.derenzi@160.78.33.34: ./
  • python is installed, see for git and the mujpy project
  • sudo apt-get install git

  • passless login does not work.
  • openafs solved: installed openafs-client (includes openafs-krb5).

There has been a problem with this installation: it was not possible to klog at psi without the erro message

   klog: unknown RPC error (-1765328164) Unable to authenticate in realm 

(surprisingly, no realm!) Solution: copy /etc/krb5.conf from pc34

  • installed alien via synaptic
  • rebooted under 4.10.0-38
  • sudo apt-get install synaptic
  • sudo apt-get install openssh-server
  • sudo apt-get install vim
  • To swap Fn-Fx and normal Fx function, x=1,...,12 press Fn-Esc. It is permanent and it is a toggle.
