Ahiahiahi: problems with alsa. Here I paste a story of the troubles as they came.
Mic does not work. Playback does. alsamixer shows all levels up and no channel muted.
Many sites selling red herrings.
Run alsa-info.sh which downloaded my configuration to

also filed bug #307810/1 at Launchpad including automatic report by gnome-sound-recorder.
Check on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto, suggests to set everything under Vista.
Vista recording level was minimal. Needs boost to hear anything. Playback is very good. \\
Coming back to Ubuntu, however, a) still no recording from mic, b) the boost gives very noisy background in headphones (Vista has better noise suppression).
